Course introduction

This workshop is intended for individuals who are currently writing use cases and who are exploring how to leverage tools together with some tips-n-tricks on how to write good use cases. The workshop consists of presentations, instructed tool tutorials, and an exercise that provides background concepts as well introductory hands-on tool experience of:
  • IBM Rational Software Architect (RSA)
  • IBM Rational RequisitePro (ReqPro)
  • IBM RUP

Course participants
This is an intermediate course for business analysts, architects, developers, and project managers, who have had experience in writing use cases but want to be more effective.
Required Experience

You should have equivalent knowledge of use case basics with some exposure to writing or using use cases.

training Objectives
  • Review popular use case writing styles and identify best practices for writing better use cases
  • Understand how to leverage tools together with some tips-n-tricks on how to use them with use cases
  • Provide background concepts as well introductory hands-on tool experience of RSA, ReqPro, and RUP
Course Arrangement

Short introduction to use cases

Use case styles - RUP, tagged, table, Cockburn

Use case writing techniques - including:

  • Using if-statements (or not)
  • Making choices
  • Showing iteration
  • Optional sequence of events
  • Level of detail
  • Creativity
  • What really goes in pre and post conditions?

Tool tutorials

  • Examining the RUP
  • Examining use case styles in RequisitePro
  • Examining use case traceability and creating a use case in RSA and RequisitePro

Exercise

  • Developing use cases

The exercise introduces a scenario that is implemented using the tips-n-tricks introduced earlier in the day. The tool tutorials are structured to demonstrate some of the major features of the products and provide an introductory hands-on experience. This should be followed with more in-depth product training.
